RoHS Compliance Services

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive has been enforced by the European
RoHS Compliance Services from Enventure TechnologiesUnion on Electrical and Electronic (EEE) Equipment Manufacturers since July 1, 2006. The regulation bans companies from placing electrical and electronic equipment that contains more than a certain threshold level of hazardous substances in the European market.

The EU has currently listed the following substances as hazardous under the ROHS directive: Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium, PolyBrominated Biphenyl (PBB) and PolyBrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE). However, the list is expected to grow.

Today, by law, all EEE manufacturers and importers that sell products in the EU are required to self-declare the RoHS compliance status of their products. On demand, they are also required to prove that due diligence has been exercised and verification of material composition has been undertaken, prior to issuing such a declaration. This calls for preserving an audit trail that can later be verified by RoHS enforcement authorities, if need be.

After the initial roll out of the regulation by the EU, RoHS has received global momentum with countries like USA, China, Korea and Japan introducing their own versions of RoHS.

Challenges for EEE Producers

With RoHS coming into effect, EEE producers face the challenge of bringing about an overall revamp in manufacturing methodology, with the changes affecting components, materials, manufacturing processes and testing methods. The biggest challenge of initiating the compliance drive is to collect and maintain information about the compliance status of each product, which in turn should map to the various components used in the product.

The issues that most manufacturers face in their quest for attaining RoHS Compliance:

  • Generating and collating data is expensive and time consuming, frequently involving numerous elements within the supply chain

  • Different country-based versions of RoHS require different strategies to get compliant

  • Material declaration formats and details differ from one supplier to another

  • Ongoing changes to the regulations and related exemptions

  • Steep learning curve due to the complexities of interpreting the legislation and its impact on the producer

  • Difficulty in identifying replacement materials that comply with the legislation
